System Requirements

Table of contents

Make sure that servers on which you plan to deploy backup infrastructure components meet the following system requirements.

NOTE:

It is not recommended that you install Veeam Backup & Replication and its components on mission-critical machines in the production environment such as VMware vCenter Server, domain controller, Microsoft Exchange Server, Small Business Server/ Windows Server Essentials and so on. If possible, install Veeam Backup & Replication and its components on dedicated machines. Backup infrastructure component roles can be co-installed.

Veeam Backup Server

Specification

Requirement

Hardware

CPU: modern x86-64 processor (minimum 2 cores or vCPUs).

Memory: 4 GB RAM plus 500 MB RAM for each concurrent job.

Disk Space: 2 GB for product installation. 10 GB per 100 VM for guest file system catalog folder (persistent data). Sufficient free disk space for Instant VM Recovery cache folder (non-persistent data, at least 10 GB recommended).

Network: 1 Gbps LAN for on-site backup and replication, and 1 Mbps WAN for off-site backup and replication recommended. High latency and reasonably unstable WAN links are supported.

OS

64-bit version of the following operating systems is supported:

Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2
Microsoft Windows Server 2012
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2

Software

During setup, the installer will perform system configuration check to determine if all prerequisite software is available on the machine where you plan to install Veeam Backup & Replication. If some of the required software components are missing, the setup wizard will offer you to install missing software automatically. This refers to:

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0
Windows Installer 4.5
Microsoft SQL Server Management Objects
Microsoft SQL Server System CLR Types
Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Service Pack 1 redistributable package

The following software must be installed manually:

Microsoft PowerShell 2.0 (required for PowerShell snap-in).
Internet Explorer 9.0 or later.

SQL Database

Local or remote installation of the following versions of Microsoft SQL Server (both Full and Express Editions are supported):

Microsoft SQL Server 2014
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express Edition is included in the setup)
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2
Microsoft SQL Server 2008
Microsoft SQL Server 2005

warning

IMPORTANT!

1.If you plan to back up VMs running Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 and Data Deduplication is enabled for some VM volumes, it is recommended to deploy Veeam Backup & Replication on a machine running Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 with Data Deduplication feature enabled. Otherwise, some types of restore operations for these VMs (such as Microsoft Windows File Level Recovery) may fail.
2.Due to its limitations, Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition can only be used for evaluation purposes or in case of a small-scale production environment. For environments with a lot of VMs, it is necessary to install a fully functional commercial version of Microsoft SQL Server.

VMware Backup Proxy Server

Hardware

CPU: modern x86 processor (minimum 2 cores or vCPUs). Using multi-core processors improves data processing performance and allows for more tasks to be processed concurrently by the backup proxy.

Memory: 2 GB RAM plus 200 MB for each concurrent task. Using faster memory (DDR3) improves data processing performance.

Disk Space: 300 MB.

Network: 1 Gbps LAN for on-site backup and replication and 1 Mbps WAN for offsite backup and replication recommended. High latency and reasonably unstable WAN links are supported.

Both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the following operating systems are supported:

Microsoft Windows 2003 x64 is no longer supported as a backup proxy for processing VMware vSphere 5.5 and later due to end of support for VDDK 6.0 by VMware.

Software

For VMware vSphere 5.5/6.0 backup proxy server on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 or earlier: Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x64). Installation package can be downloaded from http://vee.am/runtime.

warning

IMPORTANT!

To protect VMs running on ESXi 5.5 and newer, you must deploy backup proxies on machines running a 64-bit version of Microsoft Windows. VDDK 5.5 and newer does not support 32-bit versions of Microsoft Windows.

Backup Repository Server

Specification

Hardware

CPU: x86 processor (x86-64 recommended).

Memory: 4 GB RAM plus 2 GB RAM (32-bit OS) or 4 GB RAM (64-bit OS) for each concurrent job. Using more memory improves data processing performance for long chains of large backup files on backup repositories running 64-bit OS.

Disk space: 200 MB for Veeam Backup & Replication components and sufficient disk space to store backup files and replicas (high-RPM drives and RAID10 configuration recommended).

Network: 1 Gbps LAN for onsite backup and replication and 1 Mbps WAN for offsite backup and replication recommended. High latency and reasonably unstable WAN links are supported.

Both 32-bit and 64-bit (recommended) versions of the following operating systems are supported:

Linux. SSH and Perl required (please check the full list of required Perl modules here: www.veeam.com/kb2007).
64-bit edition of Linux must be able to run 32-bit programs. Pure 64-bit Linux editions are not supported.

Tape Server

WAN Accelerator

Specification

Hardware

CPU: x86-64 processor. Using multi-core processors improves data processing performance and is highly recommended on WAN links faster than 10 Mbps.

Memory: 8 GB RAM. Using faster memory (DDR3) improves data processing performance.

Disk Space: Disk space requirements depend on the WAN Accelerator role:

Source WAN Accelerator requires 20 GB per 1 TB of source data to store digests of data blocks of source VM disks. Disk space consumption is dynamic and changes as unique VMs are added to (or removed from) to jobs with WAN Acceleration enabled.
Target WAN Accelerator requires global cache size as defined by user (fixed amount). Disk space is reserved immediately upon selecting WAN Accelerators as a target one in any job.

Network: 1 Gbps or faster for onsite backup and replication and 1 Mbps or faster for offsite backup and replication. High latency and reasonably unstable WAN links are supported.

Global cache is not leveraged by Source WAN Accelerators, and so does not need to be allocated and populated on WAN Accelerators used only as source ones.

Cloud Gateway

Backup Target

Backup can be performed to the following disk-based storage targets:

Local (internal) storage of the backup repository server.
Direct Attached Storage (DAS) connected to the backup repository server, including external USB/eSATA drives and raw device mapping (RDM) volumes.
Storage Area Network (SAN). The backup repository server must be connected into the SAN fabric via a hardware or virtual HBA or software iSCSI initiator, and the corresponding volumes must be mounted in the guest operating system of the backup repository server.
Network Attached Storage (NAS) able to represent itself as an SMB (CIFS) share (direct operation) or NFS share (must be mounted on a Linux backup repository server).
EMC Data Domain (DD OS version 5.4 or 5.5) with DDBoost license. Both Ethernet and Fibre Channel (FC) connectivity is supported.
ExaGrid (firmware version 4.7 or later).
HP StoreOnce (via SMB or NFS share).

Storage Integration

Backup from Storage Snapshots and Veeam Explorer for Storage Snapshots is supported for the following storage devices:

HP 3PAR StoreServ

Fibre Channel (FC) or iSCSI connectivity.
3PAR OS 3.1.2 or later.

HP StoreVirtual (LeftHand / P4000 series) and StoreVirtual VSA

iSCSI connectivity only.
SAN/iQ version 9.5 or later.

NetApp FAS, FlexArray (V-Series), Edge VSA and IBM N Series (NetApp FAS OEM)

NFS, Fibre Channel (FC) or iSCSI connectivity.
All Data ONTAP 7-mode versions and cDot versions from 8.1 up to 8.3.1 (for Data ONTAP 8.3 or later, Veeam Backup & Replication 8.0 Update 1 is required).

Tape

Specification

Requirement

Hardware

LTO3 or later tape libraries (including VTL) and standalone drives are supported. Tape device can be directly attached to a physical or virtual backup server (via SAS/FC/SCSI) or physical or virtual Microsoft Windows server that acts as a tape server and meets the specified system requirements.

Note that VMware does not support connecting tape libraries to ESXi 5.x.

Software

Device-specific, vendor-supplied OEM driver for Microsoft Windows must be installed. Devices appearing in Microsoft Windows Device Manager as Unknown or Generic are not supported.
If multiple driver installation modes are available for your tape device, use the one that allows for multiple open handles from a host to a drive to exist at the same time. For example, if your tape vendor provides “exclusive” and “non-exclusive” drivers, you should install the “non-exclusive” one.
The tape device can be connected to one Veeam backup server or one tape server only.

Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager Server

Hard Disk Space: 2 GB for product installation plus sufficient disk space to store guest file system catalog from connected backup servers (according to data retention policy).

Network: 1 Mbps or faster connection to Veeam backup servers.

IMPORTANT!

It is recommended that you install the same product version on the Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager server and Veeam backup servers. If you use different versions of Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager and Veeam Backup & Replication, you may not be able to leverage all features in Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager.

Veeam Backup Search Server

Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Active Directory

Minimum supported domain and forest functional level is Windows 2003.

Note: Database files created by domain controller running on Microsoft Windows Server 2012 or Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 can be open only if Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Active Directory is installed on the machine with the same OS or Microsoft Windows 8.x OS.

Software

Veeam Backup & Replication 8.0 (any edition).
Microsoft PowerShell 2.0.
Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Active Directory supports restore of both mailbox-enabled objects (including hard-deleted items and Online Archives) and mail-enabled objects for the following Exchange versions: Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 SP1 and later and Microsoft Exchange Server 2013.
For other Exchange versions, restore of mailbox-enabled objects is not supported (however, mail-enabled objects can be restored).
To open database files, Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Active Directory uses a service dynamic link library (esent.dll) that is installed together with Microsoft Active Directory Domain Services and can be found in the system directory at %SystemRoot%.
Note: Esent.dll should be of the same version as Microsoft Active Directory Domain Services used to create database files.
To restore account passwords, Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Active Directory uses the registry database. If you plan to restore passwords, make sure that System registry hive is available (default location is %systemroot%\System32\Config).
If you restore Active Directory database from Active Directory backup using Veeam file-level restore, the registry hive will be located automatically. Otherwise (for example, if you restore from an imported backup or from VeeamZIP file) make sure that the System registry hive is located in the same folder as the DIT file.

Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange

Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange supports mailbox database (EDB) files created with 64-bit versions of the following Microsoft Exchange systems:

To open mailbox databases, Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange requires a service dynamic link library (ESE.DLL) that is installed together with Microsoft Exchange.

Veeam Explorer for Microsoft SharePoint

Staging
Microsoft SQL Server

1.The staging Microsoft SQL Server must run on the machine where Veeam Explorer for Microsoft SharePoint is installed (Veeam backup server).
2.The staging system must run the same or later version of Microsoft SQL Server as the server that hosts restored Microsoft SharePoint content databases. For example, if the Microsoft SharePoint server uses Microsoft SQL Server 2008, the staging system can run Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or later.

Veeam Explorer for Microsoft SQL

Staging
Microsoft SQL Server

For export scenarios and restore to the state before a selected transaction, Veeam Explorer for Microsoft SQL Server uses a staging Microsoft SQL Server. By default, local Microsoft SQL Server deployed with Veeam backup server will be used as a staging system. This Microsoft SQL Server must have the same or later version as the original Microsoft SQL Server.

IMPORTANT!

You cannot install Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager on a machine running Microsoft Windows Server Core. However, you can assign roles of a backup proxy, backup repository, WAN accelerator, Veeam Cloud Connect infrastructure components and tape infrastructure components to machines running Microsoft Windows Server Core.
