System Requirements

The protected Veeam Agent computer must meet requirements listed in the table below.

System Requirements Note:

The following system requirements apply to Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows operating in the standalone mode. To learn about system requirements for Veeam Agent managed by Veeam Backup & Replication, see the System Requirements section in the Veeam Agent Management Guide.

Specification

Requirement

Hardware

CPU: x86-64 processor.

Memory: 2 GB RAM.

Disk Space: 150 MB for product installation.

Network: 1 Mbps or faster1.

System firmware: BIOS or UEFI.

Drive encryption: Microsoft BitLocker (optional)2.

1 High latency and reasonably unstable WAN links are supported.

2 Only Microsoft BitLocker is supported for drive encryption. Other drive encryption products are not supported.

OS

Both 64-bit and 32-bit (where applicable) versions of the following operating systems are supported1:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2019
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2016
  • Microsoft Windows Server Semi-Annual Channel (including version 1903)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 SP12
  • Microsoft Windows 10 (including version 1903)3
  • Microsoft Windows 8.x
  • Microsoft Windows 7 SP1

1 Consider the following:

  • Insider versions of Microsoft Windows Client and Server OSes are not supported.
  • Small Business Server and Server Essentials editions of Microsoft Windows Server OSes are supported.
  • Windows Embedded / Windows IoT OSes are supported (except for custom builds by certain vendors that do not have components required for Veeam Agent operation).
  • Server Core installations of Microsoft Windows Server OSes are not supported by Veeam Agent operating in the standalone mode. You can protect Server Core installations using Veeam Agent backup jobs managed by backup server. To learn more, see the Veeam Agent Management Guide.
  • Microsoft Failover Clusters are supported for Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows managed by Veeam Backup & Replication. Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows operating in the standalone mode does not support Microsoft Failover Clusters.

2 Veeam CBT driver is supported only if Microsoft Windows update KB3033929 is installed on the Veeam Agent computer.

3 Microsoft Windows 10 Education is supported starting from build 10586 and later.

File System

Microsoft Windows FAT32/exFAT, NTFS, ReFS file systems are supported.

The supported file system must reside on a volume that is 64 TB or smaller, because Veeam Agent uses the Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider to create a volume shadow copy during the backup. To learn more about the limitation, see this Microsoft KB article.

Software

The following required 3rd party software is included in the setup program:

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Management Objects
  • Microsoft SQL Server System CLR Types

When installing the product, the setup program checks whether all prerequisite software is available on the target computer. If some of the required software components are missing, the missing software is installed automatically.

If you plan to use Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows with Veeam Backup & Replication, you must install Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 4 on the Veeam backup server.

Microsoft SQL Database

Microsoft SQL Server 2012 SP4 Express LocalDB Edition (installed with the product).

Backup Source

Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows supports backup of data that resides in the following types of storage:

  • Local (internal) storage of the protected computer.
  • Direct attached storage (DAS), such as USB, eSATA or Firewire external drives (USB sticks and SD cards are not supported).
  • Storage Area Network (SAN), such as iSCSI connected volumes.

Backup Target

Backup can be performed to the following types of storage:

Disk-based storage

  • Local (internal) storage of the protected computer (not recommended).
  • Direct attached storage (DAS), such as USB, eSATA or Firewire external drives, and raw device mapping (RDM) volumes.
  • Network Attached Storage (NAS) able to represent itself as SMB (CIFS) share.
  • Storage Area Network (SAN), such as iSCSI connected volumes.
  • Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 4 or later backup repository.1

Cloud storage

  • Veeam Cloud Connect 9.5 Update 4 or later cloud repository.
  • Microsoft OneDrive storage (for Microsoft Windows 7 SP1, 8.x and 10).

1 Advanced integration with HPE StoreOnce storage appliances via the HPE StoreOnce Catalyst technology is not supported. If you want to use an HPE StoreOnce storage appliance as a Veeam backup repository, add the HPE StoreOnce repository to the backup infrastructure as a CIFS share.

Network

Consider the following:

  • Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows should be able to establish a direct IP connection to the Veeam Backup & Replication server. Thus, Veeam Agent cannot work with Veeam Backup & Replication that is located behind the NAT gateway.
  • Domain names of the Veeam Agent computer, Veeam Backup & Replication server and other servers in the Veeam backup infrastructure must be resolvable into IPv4 addresses.
I want to report a typo

There is a misspelling right here:

I want to let the Veeam Documentation Team know about that.
