Default Infrastructure Components

In this article

While you deploy a Nutanix Mine cluster, the Foundation for Mine with Veeam server automatically deploys infrastructure components which are required for data protection and disaster recovery operations. By default, a Nutanix Mine cluster contains the following components:

    1. Foundation for Mine with Veeam server: a controller server that deploys the Veeam Backup & Replication server, backup proxies and repositories.
    2. Veeam Backup & Replication server: a server that manages backup and restore operations and allows to add new backup infrastructure components.

During deployment of the Nutanix Mine cluster, you can choose to deploy a new Veeam Backup & Replication server on the cluster or use an external Veeam Backup & Replication server. As an external server, you can select any existing Veeam Backup & Replication server connected to the same network to which the Nutanix Mine cluster is connected. Note that if you select an existing Veeam Backup & Replication server, then the server will be outside the Nutanix Mine cluster.

    1. Backup proxies. A backup proxy is an architecture component that processes backup workload and sends it to a backup repository.

Depending on the number of nodes on the Nutanix Mine cluster, the default infrastructure contains 3 or 6 backup proxies:

    • If there are less than 8 nodes on the Nutanix Mine cluster, the default infrastructure contains 3 backup proxies.
    • If there are 8 or more nodes on the Nutanix Mine cluster, the default infrastructure contains 6 backup proxies.

The role of a backup proxy is assigned to Microsoft Windows VMs deployed by the Foundation for Mine with Veeam server. Also, Veeam Backup & Replication server itself functions as a backup proxy. If during the cluster deployment you have selected an external Veeam Backup & Replication server, the Nutanix Mine cluster will contain an additional backup proxy to substitute the Veeam Backup & Replication server.

To learn more about backup proxies and how to manage them, see Backup Proxies.

    1. Backup repositories. A backup repository is a storage location where Veeam Backup & Replication keeps backup files, VM copies and metadata for replicated VMs.

Depending on the number of nodes on the Nutanix Mine cluster, the default infrastructure contains 3 or 6 Linux VMs used as backup repositories:

    • If there are less than 8 nodes on the Nutanix Mine cluster, the default infrastructure will contain 3 Linux repositories.
    • If there are 8 or more nodes on the Nutanix Mine cluster, the default infrastructure will contain 6 Linux repositories.

Within the Nutanix Mine infrastructure, Veeam Backup & Replication combines the capacities of these Linux repositories into a single scale-out backup repository.

To learn more about backup repositories and how to manage them, see Backup Repositories.
