Veeam Availability Console can be used as a platform for managing Veeam Backup & Replication infrastructures. The solution allows you to manage jobs configured to protect VMs, run failover plans, connect to backup servers remotely, monitor and report on the status of data protection operations in the virtual environment.
Consider the following scenario: you plan to provide managed backup and recovery services to client Department that run a VMware vSphere or Microsoft Hyper-V virtual environment. VMs in the client department infrastructure will be protected with Veeam Backup & Replication. You want to use Veeam Availability Console to manage Veeam Backup & Replication servers deployed on the client side, perform ongoing management tasks, run monitoring and reporting.
To create chargeback reports, you plan to set a charge rate for a managed VM. A managed VM is a VM that is included in a job configured on a client backup server and that has a backup or replica restore point.
To follow instructions provided for this evaluation case, you should use an environment with two logical sites:
- Management site is a location where the Veeam Availability Console is deployed.
- Client site is a location where client virtual and Veeam Backup & Replication infrastructures reside. On this site, you will need to choose one or more Veeam Backup & Replication servers that you will connect to Veeam Availability Console.
The management and client sites normally belong to different networks, separated by WAN links. However, for trial purposes, these sites can be parts of the same network.
To follow instructions provided in this scenario, complete the following prerequisites:
- Deploy Veeam Availability Console as described in Deployment.
- Perform initial configuration as described in Before You Begin: Initial Configuration.
- On the client site, choose or deploy one or more Veeam Backup & Replication servers that you will connect to Veeam Availability Console. You can install Veeam Backup & Replication using the Veeam Availability Console setup image.
- On the Veeam Backup & Replication servers, configure several jobs protecting client VMs. Make sure that you configure at least one backup, replication or backup copy job.
To manage Veeam Backup & Replication in Veeam Availability Console, you need to obtain and install the following licenses:
- Free Veeam Availability Console license for Enterprises. The free license does not cover any number of workstations or servers. For trial purposes, you can obtain a trial license.
- Paid license for Veeam Backup & Replication. A paid license must be installed on each Veeam Backup & Replication server that you plan to manage in Veeam Availability Console.
- Free license for Veeam Cloud Connect. This license is required to unlock the cloud functionality on a Veeam Backup & Replication server, and turn it to a Veeam Cloud Connect server that will be used by Veeam Availability Console. The free license does not cover any number of VMs or Veeam backup agents.
To follow this evaluation scenario, perform these steps:
- Configure a chargeback template.
- Register an account for a managed client department.
- Connect Veeam Backup & Replication servers to Veeam Availability Console.
- Run Veeam Backup & Replication jobs.
- Create a backup report.
- Create a chargeback report.
