Configure Backup Proxy

A backup proxy is a Veeam Backup & Replication component that sits between the backup server and the backup repository. While the backup server administers tasks, the backup proxy retrieves VM data from the production storage, compresses and deduplicates it, and sends it to the backup repository.

By default, the role of the backup proxy is assigned to the backup server itself. However, this is sufficient only for small environments with low traffic load. For large environments, it is recommended to deploy dedicated backup proxies to remove unwanted overhead from the backup server.

  • VMware vSphere: To learn how to add a VMware backup proxy, see the Adding VMware Backup Proxies section of the Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide. Note that the physical or virtual machine that you want to use as a backup proxy must meet system requirements.
  • Microsoft Hyper-V: To learn how to add an off-host backup proxy, see the Adding Off-Host Backup Proxies section of the Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide. Note that the physical or virtual machine that you want to use as a backup proxy must meet system requirements.
