Retention Policy for Archived Backups

In the backup archiving scenario, restore points are marked with a flag of a related schedule type: the (D) flag is used to mark daily restore points; (W) — weekly; (M) — monthly and (Y) — yearly. Veeam Backup for AWS uses these flags to control the retention period for archived backups. Once a flag of a higher tier schedule is assigned to a restore point, this restore point can no longer be removed — it remains archived for the period defined in retention settings of this schedule. When the specified retention period ends, the flag is unassigned from the restore point. If the restore point does not have any other flags assigned, it is removed according to retention settings of a lowest tier schedule.

For example, you may want a backup policy to create cloud-native snapshots 3 times a day, keep 3 daily snapshots in the snapshot chain and archive one of the created snapshots for 2 weeks. In this case, you must enable two schedule types in backup policy settings: daily and weekly.

  • In daily schedule settings, you define hours and days when the backup policy must start creating daily restore points (for example, 7:00 AM, 9:00 AM, and 11:00 AM; Working Days), and a number of daily restore points to retain (for example, 3).

Retention Policy for Archived Backups

  • In weekly schedule settings, you select which one of the daily restore points must be archived and specify retention period for the archived restore point.

For example, you want to archive a daily restore point created at 7:00 AM on Monday for 2 weeks. In weekly schedule settings, you select 7:00 AM, Monday, 2 restore points to retain.

Retention Policy for Archived Backups

According to the specified schedule settings, Veeam Backup for AWS creates cloud-native snapshots in the following way:

  1. On the first working day (Monday), a backup session started at 7:00 AM creates the first restore point. The restore point is marked with the (D) flag as it was created according to the daily schedule.

Since 7:00 AM, Monday is specified in weekly schedule settings, Veeam Backup for AWS treats this restore point as archived and adds the (W) flag to it.

  1. On the same day (Monday), after backup session runs at 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM, created restore points are marked with the (D) flag.

Retention Policy for Archived Backups

  1. On the next working day (Tuesday), after a backup session run at 7:00 AM, a created restore point is marked with the (D) flag.

By the moment when the backup session completes, the number of restore points with the (D) flag will exceed the retention limit specified in daily schedule settings. However, Veeam Backup for AWS will not remove the earliest restore point with the (D) flag from the snapshot chain (7:00 AM, Monday) as this restore point is also marked with a flag of a higher tier schedule. Instead, Veeam Backup for AWS will unassign the (D) flag from the restore point. This restore point will be archived for the retention period specified in weekly schedule settings (2 restore points, which in fact is 2 weeks).

Retention Policy for Archived Backups

  1. On the same day (Tuesday) after a backup session run at 9:00 AM, the number of restore points with the (D) flag will exceed the retention limit once again. Veeam Backup for AWS will remove from the snapshot chain the restore point created at 9:00 AM on Monday as no flags of a higher tier schedule are assigned to this restore point.

Retention Policy for Archived Backups

  1. Veeam Backup for AWS continues creating restore points for the next week in the same way as described in steps 1–4.
  2. On week 3, after a backup session run at 7:00 AM on Monday, the number of archived restore points will exceed the retention limit. Veeam Backup for AWS will unassign the (W) flag from the earliest archived restore point. Since no other flags are assigned to this restore point, Veeam Backup for AWS will remove this restore point from the snapshot chain.
