Considerations and Limitations
Before you start migration of your backup data from Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 to Veeam Data Cloud, make sure the following prerequisites are met:
- The source Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 server whose backup data you want to migrate runs Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 build 8.1.0.3503 or later.
- The backup whose data you want to migrate resides in a Microsoft Azure object storage repository. The repository uses snapshot-based retention.
- A new Veeam Data Cloud account is created for your organization, and a new target location for your Microsoft 365 backups is configured. The target location must not contain backups before the migration process is completed.
- You have a SAS URL to access the Azure Blob that contains the backup data you want to migrate. You must generate the SAS URL for the source container in advance, before starting the migration process. For information on how to do this, see Microsoft Learn.
The SAS URL must meet the following requirements:
- The SAS URL must have the Read and List permissions.
- The SAS URL must be valid for the time required to complete the migration process. This time depends on the size of the backup data and the location of the datacenters where the source backup repository and target Veeam Data Cloud reside.
Note |
During migration, the Veeam Migration for Microsoft 365 tool stops Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 Proxy Service on the default backup proxy server — that is, the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 server where the tool is installed. If the source backup repository works with a remote backup proxy or a backup proxy pool, you must do the following at the step 6 of the migration procedure:
For details, see Migrating Backup Data. |
The Veeam Migration for Microsoft 365 scenario has the following limitations:
- You can migrate backup data from one source backup repository at a time. If you want to migrate data from multiple backup repositories, perform migration for each repository one by one and target each migration process at a separate backup repository in Veeam Data Cloud.
- The following types of backup repositories are not supported for data migration:
- Microsoft Azure Archive Storage object storage repositories
- Backup repositories that use the item-level retention
- Immutable backup repositories
- Repositories that contain backup copies
- Repositories with object versioning enabled
- Repositories that contain data of multiple Microsoft 365 tenants
