Migrating Backup Data from Amazon S3

This section describes how to migrate your backup data from an Amazon S3 object storage repository configured in Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 to Veeam Data Cloud.

To migrate your Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 data to Veeam Data Cloud, complete the following steps:

  1. On the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 server, click the Veeam Migration for Microsoft 365 icon on the Microsoft Windows desktop to launch the migration tool.
  2. On the migration wizard welcome page, click Start.

At this step, you can also specify the migration settings. For more information, see Specifying Migration Settings.

Migrating Backup Data

  1. At the Source Configuration step of the wizard, specify settings to connect to the PostgreSQL instance. The PostgreSQL instance contains the configuration database of the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 server used to create backup whose data you want to migrate to Veeam Data Cloud:
  1. From the PostgreSQL Version drop-down list, select the version of the PostgreSQL database system that runs the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 configuration database: 15 (if the product uses PostgreSQL version 15.9) or 16 (if the product uses PostgreSQL version 16.4). For information on the PostgreSQL versions supported in the product, see the System Requirements section in the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 User Guide.
  2. In the Database Hostname field, specify the domain name or IP address of the server where the PostgreSQL instance with the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 configuration database resides.
  3. In the Database Port field, specify the port number of the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 PostgreSQL instance.
  4. In the Database Username field, specify the user name of the database user account to connect to the PostgreSQL instance.
  5. In the Database Password field, specify the password of the database user account to connect to the PostgreSQL instance.

Migrating Backup Data

  1. At the next step of the wizard, specify settings of the source backup repository from which you want to migrate backup data to Veeam Data Cloud:
  1. From the Client Type drop-down list, select the type of object storage repository that contains the backup data you want to migrate: AWS.
  2. From the Client Repository drop-down list, select the necessary object storage repository. The list contains object storage repositories of the selected type added on the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 server.

Tip

You can click Refresh to refresh the list of backup repositories, for example, if new repositories were added to Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 while the migration wizard was launched.

  1. Click Validate. The migration tool will check whether the source object storage repository meets the requirements. For information on what backup repositories are supported for migration, see Planning and Preparation.
  2. Once the validation check is completed, click Next.

Migrating Backup Data

  1. At the next step of the wizard, do the following:
  1. In the Client Name field, check the name of the backup repository. The value in this field is populated automatically. The migration tool will also automatically populate the value in the Client Folder field that defines the location of the migrated data.
  2. In the AWS Access Key field, specify the access key used to access the source Amazon S3 object storage repository.
  3. In the AWS Secret Key field, specify the secret key used to access the source Amazon S3 object storage repository.
  4. In the AWS Bucket field, check the name of the bucket that contains the backup data you want to migrate. The value in this field is populated automatically.
  5. In the Region field, specify the region code of the datacenter where the source Amazon S3 object storage repository resides.
  6. Click Next.

Migrating Backup Data

  1. At the Target Configuration step of the wizard, specify the Migration API settings and start the migration process:
  1. From the Migration API Endpoint drop-down list, select the migration API endpoint that you want to use, based on the region.
  2. In the Migration API Key field, enter the API key that you obtained in Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365. For more information, see Obtaining Migration API Key.
  3. Click Begin Migration.

Important

If the source backup repository works with a remote backup proxy or a backup proxy pool, before you click Begin Migration, do the following:

  • If the source backup repository works with a remote backup proxy, stop Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 Proxy Service manually on the remote backup proxy server.
  • If the source backup repository works with a backup proxy pool, stop Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 Proxy Service manually on each backup proxy server added to this backup proxy pool.

For more information, see Planning and Preparation.

Migrating Backup Data

  1. Wait for the migration process to complete. The time required for migration depends on the size of the backup data and the location of the datacenters where the source backup repository and target Veeam Data Cloud reside.

If you want to stop the process before it is completed, click Cancel Migration.

  1. Once the migration process is completed, click Close to finish working with the migration tool.

After the migration process is completed, it takes 5 to 10 minutes to update the information about migrated backups in Veeam Data Cloud. Then, backups of your Microsoft 365 data become available in Veeam Data Cloud, and you can perform restore operations with these backups. Once you configure and start a backup policy, Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365 will run an incremental backup session.

Repeat the migration procedure for all backup repositories that contain the data you want to migrate to Veeam Data Cloud.
