Table of contents

The report helps you to detect virtual machines that have less allocated vRAM or vCPU resources than they require.

Description

The Virtual Machines. Right-sizing — VMs Undersized for Memory and CPU report analyzes historical performance and configured resource allocation to provide recommendations for an optimized VM configuration and allocation of resources.

Parameters

Date/time Selection: defines a time period to analyze in the report.

Sections to show: defines whether the report will analyze vRAM resource allocation, vCPU resource allocation or both.

Show details: defines whether the report should display results in the collapsed or expanded view. If you choose No, only general information will be displayed in the report. The report will not include charts in the output.

Scope: defines a list of Groups or Objects to include in the report (by default, the VMware Virtual Machine Group is selected).
The Add Group option returns a Group and all objects that a group contains (with all performance counter instances). The Add Object option returns only the selected object.

Count: defines the maximum number of virtual machines to display in the report output.

Sample Usage

Report on top 10 VMs that have less allocated memory than they require. Use performance statistics for the previous quarter as a ground for the report analysis.

Instructions

1.Open the Virtual Machines. Right-Sizing — VMs Undersized for Memory and CPU report.
2.From the From list, choose Previous Quarter > First Day. From the To list, choose Previous Quarter > Last Day.
3.From the Sections to Show list, choose vRAM.
4.From the Show Details list, choose Yes (expanded).
5.From the Performance Modeling Based On list, select Average Usage.
6.In the Top N Count field, type 10.
7.Click Run to view the report.

Report Output

The report will show tables and charts displaying information on top 10 VMs memory consumption: allocated, recommended, min/max and average memory values, standard deviation and current configuration.

noteNote

If a virtual machine was turned off at some time during the reporting interval, then the configuration information (amount of allocated memory) for this period may be unavailable.

All recommendations are based on the current configuration. If a virtual machine has no current configuration (is turned off or decommissioned), it will not be included in the report.

You can click the name of an undersized VM or the Undersized VMs link in the RAM analysis table to drill down to performance details for these VMs.
