Capacity Planning for Azure Hybrid Cloud

This report evaluates workloads in your on-premise virtual infrastructure and estimates the resources needed to run these workloads in the Windows Azure cloud.

Description

The Capacity Planning for Azure Hybrid Cloud report can be run either for the VMware vSphere or for the Microsoft Hyper-V infrastructure.

The report analyzes VM configuration and historical performance (CPU, storage and memory resources consumed by VMs and VM templates running on vSphere/Hyper-V hosts) and provides estimation of the Windows Azure hosting options required to support your workloads in the cloud.

Calculation of the necessary cloud hosting services is based on the Windows Azure specifications.

Parameters

Date/time Selection: defines a time period for which configuration and performance data will be analyzed in the report.

Scope: defines a list of Groups or Objects that will be analyzed in the report (by default, the VMware Virtual Machine Group and Veeam Hyper-V Virtual Machines Group are selected).

Sample Usage

Calculate the Windows Azure cloud hosting options required to support virtual machines running on the selected Hyper-V host. Use performance statistics for the previous quarter as a ground for the report analysis.

Note

In this example we will run the report for the Hyper-V infrastructure. However, you can run a similar report for the VMware infrastructure.

Instructions

  1. Open the Capacity Planning for Azure Hybrid Cloud report.
  2. From the From list, select Previous Quarter > First Day. From the To list, select Previous Quarter > Last Day.
  3. In the Scope section, select the default groups and click Remove. Then search for virtual machines that run on the required Hyper-V host. Click Add Group. In the Group Name search box, type the name of the host and click Search. In the list of search results, select the object that belongs to the Hyper-V Host Virtual Machines Container class, click Add and click OK.
  4. Click Run to view the report.

Report Output

The Summary table will describe your on-premise infrastructure: total number of virtual machines and VM templates, total allocated vCPU cores, total vCPU usage, total allocated memory, total memory usage and total used storage resources.

The Required Infrastructure output for Azure table will show the list of Azure Cloud VM profiles. For each profile, the report will provide recommendations on the number of VMs that you will need to deploy in the cloud to run your applications and workloads.

You can click a VM profile in the Required Infrastructure output for Azure table to drill down to the profile description. You can click a number in the table to drill down to the list of VMs that matches the profile and check the performance data for these VMs.

You can click a VM profile in the Azure VM Sizes Reference table to view Microsoft online documentation on Virtual Machine and Cloud Service Sizes for Azure.
