Adding Cloud Storage Backup Repositories

In this article

Google Cloud Plug-in for Veeam Backup & Replication uses Cloud Storage buckets with a specific storage class as repositories to keep image-level backups of VM and Cloud SQL instances. In the Veeam Backup & Replication console, you can deploy new Cloud Storage backup repositories or connect to existing repositories.

Google Cloud Plug-in for Veeam Backup & Replication supports the following types of cloud storage backup repositories:

A standard backup repository is a Cloud Storage bucket with the Standard storage class assigned.

Use this class of storage repository to store backups in a high-performance, short-term storage that you plan to access frequently. Backups that are stored in this repository are shown under the External Repository node.

To store backups of VM or Cloud SQL instances in a standard backup repository, first add it to the infrastructure and then enable image-level backups in a backup policy. For more information, see Configuring VM Backup and Configuring Cloud SQL Backup in the Veeam Backup for Google Cloud User Guide.

An archive repository is a Cloud Storage bucket with the Archive Storage class assigned.

Use this class of storage repository to store backups in a cost-effective, long-term storage Google Cloud archival storage. Backups that are stored in this repository are shown under the External Repository (Archive) node. Note that you will not be able to manage this repository (edit repository settings, synchronize or upgrade it) and perform any actions described in the Data Recovery section except for the Restoring to Google Cloud option.

To archive backups of VM or Cloud SQL instances, first add an archive repository and then enable backup archiving in a backup policy. For more information, see Configuring VM Backup and Configuring Cloud SQL Backup in the Veeam Backup for Google Cloud User Guide. For more information on how archiving works, see the Enabling Backup Archiving section in the Veeam Backup for Google Cloud User Guide.

For more information on Google Cloud storage classes, see the Storage classes section in the Google Cloud documentation.

Depending on your configuration, you will need to follow the instructions from one of the following sections.

    Connecting to Existing Backup Repositories

All Cloud Storage backup repositories that have been already configured on a Veeam Backup for Google Cloud appliance are added automatically to the Veeam Backup & Replication infrastructure when you connect to this appliance.

If a Cloud Storage backup repository that is already added to the Veeam Backup for Google Cloud infrastructure is not available in the Veeam Backup & Replication infrastructure, follow the instructions provided in the Editing Appliance Settings section. At the Repositories step of the Edit Veeam Backup for Google Cloud Appliance wizard, specify credentials to be used to access the repository and click Apply. After that, the repository will be added to the Veeam Backup & Replication infrastructure. Note that you can not specify credentials for the archive repository.

    Note

If you do not want or you do not have an option to add the Veeam Backup for Google Cloud appliance where a Cloud Storage backup repository is deployed to the Veeam Backup & Replication infrastructure, add an external Google Cloud storage repository.  For more information on external repositories, see Adding External Google Cloud Storage section in the Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide. In this case, restore from backups stored in this repository will work as described in the How Restore to Google Cloud Works section in the Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide. This configuration can be necessary, for example, if your product license is not supported.

Note that you can not add archive repositories as an external repository if the Veeam Backup for Google Cloud appliance is not added to the Veeam Backup & Replication infrastructure.

Deploying New Cloud Storage Backup Repositories

When you deploy new Cloud Storage backup repositories in the Veeam Backup & Replication console, they are added to the Veeam Backup for Google Cloud infrastructure and are also displayed in the Veeam Backup for Google Cloud infrastructure.

To deploy a standard backup repository, follow steps described in the Adding Standard Backup Repository section.

To deploy an archive repository, follow steps described in Adding Archive Repository section.
