Performing Backup

To produce backups, Veeam Backup for Microsoft Entra ID runs backup jobs. A backup job is a collection of settings that define the way backup operations are performed: what data to back up, where to store backups, when to start the backup process, and so on.

Veeam Backup for Microsoft Entra ID supports two types of backup jobs:

  • Tenant backup jobs that protect tenant data, such as users, groups, administrative units, roles, conditional access policies, intune policies, applications and service principals.
  • Log jobs that protect tenant audit and sign-in logs.

Important

  • Protection of conditional access policies, intune policies and audit logs is excluded from all free licenses and from the Veeam Data Platform Foundation license package — to back up these tenant items or logs, you must obtain the Veeam Data Platform Advanced or the Veeam Data Platform Premium license package. For more information, see section Licensing.
  • Microsoft Entra ID uses different names for app-related entities: in the Microsoft Entra admin center, the term application registration is used to represent an entity called application in Microsoft Graph, and the term enterprise application is used to represent service principals — keep in mind that Veeam Backup for Microsoft Entra ID uses the Microsoft Graph terminology. For more information, see Microsoft Docs.

One backup job can protect data or logs of only one tenant. You can instruct Veeam Backup for Microsoft Entra ID to run jobs automatically according to a specified schedule or start them manually.
