Step 3. Select VMs to Back Up
At the Virtual Machines step of the wizard, specify the backup scope — choose whether you want to back up individual VMs or VMs included into protection domains.
- If you select the Source > Virtual Machine option, you must specify the machines explicitly.
By default, backup jobs process all disks attached to the selected VMs. If you want to exclude specific disks of a VM from the backup scope, do the following. First, select the VM and click Protect Disks > Protect Selected Disks Only. Then, choose a bus type of the disks that you want to back up, select the necessary disks and click Add in the Protect Selected Disks Only window. Disks that you do not select will be excluded from the backup job.
- If you select the Source > Protection Domain option, Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV will regularly check for new consistency groups (VMs and volume groups) added to the domain and automatically update the job settings to include these groups in the backup scope. For a protection domain to be displayed in the list of the available domains, it must be configured in the Nutanix AHV cluster as described in Nutanix documentation.
By default, backup jobs process all VMs added to the selected protection domains. If you want to exclude specific VMs from the backup scope, click VM Exclusion, select the Exclude by rule check box and specify a VM name mask in the Rule expression field. Use the asterisk character (*) to mask any number of symbols (including absence of symbols) and the question mark (?) to mask one symbol.
If you want to exclude specific disks of a VM included into a protection domain from the backup scope, do the following. First, select the protection domain and click Disk Protection. Choose whether you want to configure exclusion rules for the entire protection domain or for a specific VM and select Protect Selected Disks Only. Then, choose a bus type of the disks that you want to back up, select the necessary disks and click Add. Disks that you do not select will be excluded from the backup job.
