Upgrading to Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV 4.0

You can upgrade Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV from version 2.0, 2.1, 3.0 or 3a to 4.0.

Important

Veeam Availability for Nutanix AHV 1.0 is no longer supported. To upgrade it to Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV 3a, follow the instructions described in the Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV 3.0 User Guide, section Appendix B. Upgrading Veeam Availability for Nutanix AHV 1.0.

Before you start the upgrade process, do the following:

  • [Applies only to upgrading from version 2.0, 2.1, 3.0 or 3a] Download Veeam Backup & Replication version 12.0.0.1420 from the Veeam downloads page.
  • Download the latest Nutanix AHV Plug-in version from the Veeam downloads page.
  • Plan a maintenance period. Typically, the upgrade process takes up to one hour. Make sure there are no jobs currently running or scheduled to run during this period. Wait for the jobs to complete or disable the jobs manually before you start upgrading Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV.
  • Make sure the Nutanix AHV backup appliance is powered on.
  • Back up the configuration database of the Nutanix AHV backup appliance. For more information, see the following sections:

Online Upgrade

If your Veeam Backup & Replication server and the Nutanix AHV backup appliance are connected to the Internet, do the following:

  1. [Applies only to upgrading from version 2.0, 2.1, 3.0 or 3a] Upgrade your Veeam Backup & Replication server to version 12 as described in the Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide, section Upgrading to Veeam Backup & Replication 12. Then, complete the Components Update wizard as described in the Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide, section Server Components Upgrade.

Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV will be upgraded to version 4.0.

  1. Upgrade Nutanix AHV Plug-in to version 4a. To do that, run the installation file and complete the Nutanix AHV Plug-in for Veeam Backup & Replication wizard using default settings.
  2. Upgrade the Nutanix AHV backup appliance to version 4a. To do that:
  1. In the Veeam Backup & Replication console, open the Backup Infrastructure view.
  2. Navigate to Backup Proxies > Out of Date.
  3. Select the Nutanix AHV backup appliance and click Upgrade Proxy on the ribbon.
  4. In the Components Update window, click Apply.

Tip

To protect the Nutanix AHV backup appliance, you must use the Configuration Backup functionality in the Veeam Backup & Replication console. Starting from version 4.0, an auto-protection PD snapshot job is no longer created for protecting the Nutanix AHV backup appliance and can be deleted if it is still present in the job list after upgrade from version 2.0, 2.1, 3.0 or 3a.

Offline Upgrade

If your Veeam Backup & Replication server or the Nutanix AHV backup appliance is not connected to the Internet, do the following:

  1. Ensure you have backed up the configuration database of the Nutanix AHV backup appliance.
  1. Remove the Nutanix AHV backup appliance from the backup infrastructure. For more information, see Removing Nutanix AHV Backup Proxies.

Note

Do not select the Permanently delete the proxy VM from the cluster and all of its backup jobs (irreversible) option. If upgrade fails, you will be able to add the appliance back to the backup infrastructure.

  1. Shut down Nutanix AHV backup appliance VMs.
  2. [Applies only to upgrading from version 2.0, 2.1, 3.0 or 3a] Upgrade your Veeam Backup & Replication server to version 12 as described in the Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide, section Upgrading to Veeam Backup & Replication 12. Then, complete the Components Update wizard as described in the Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide, section Server Components Upgrade.

Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV will be upgraded to version 4.0.

  1. Upgrade Nutanix AHV Plug-in to version 4a. To do that, run the installation file and complete the Nutanix AHV Plug-in for Veeam Backup & Replication wizard using default settings.
  2. Deploy a new Nutanix AHV backup appliance. For more information, see Adding AHV Backup Proxy.
  3. Use the backed-up configuration of the old Nutanix AHV backup appliance to restore the configuration settings to the new Nutanix AHV backup appliance. For more information, see Restoring Configuration Settings.
  4. After the configuration settings are restored successfully and you ensure the new Nutanix AHV backup appliance functions properly, remove the old Nutanix AHV backup appliance from the cluster.

Tip
