Configuring Categorization Model

To present the virtual infrastructure from the business point of view, Veeam ONE Business View uses categories, groups and objects.

  • Category is a logical division or a sector of the virtual infrastructure. Every category includes one or more groups.
  • Group is a collection of virtual infrastructure objects that share the same characteristics, or match the same criteria from the business point of view. You can think of a group as of a tag that is assigned to an object.
  • Objects are categorized elements of the virtual infrastructure. There are four types of elements you can categorize in Veeam ONE Business View: clusters, hosts, storage objects and virtual machines.

Veeam ONE Business View categorization design is organized in the following way: categories can include one or more groups; groups can include one or more virtual infrastructure objects.

Groups within the same category have exclusive membership. One virtual infrastructure object cannot be included in two groups within the same category. However, the same object can be included in two or more groups within different categories.

The following picture illustrates an example of Veeam ONE Business View categorization model.

Configuring Categorization Model

In the example above, the categorization model includes categories Department and Purpose.

  • Department category includes groups IT, Sales and Support
  • Purpose category includes groups Fileservers and Web

Virtual machines numbered 1-8 are included in groups within both categories. Note that one and the same virtual machine is included only in one group within the same category.

How to Configure Categorization Model

To start working with Veeam ONE Business View, you must configure the categorization model:

  1. Create categories.

Categories describe logical divisions or sectors of your virtual infrastructure from the business point of view.

  1. For every category, create groups.

Groups act as containers for virtual infrastructure objects. You can create static or dynamic groups.

  1. [Optional] Create categorization rules.

Create categorization rules if you want to automate population of virtual infrastructure objects in static groups.
