In terms of VAO, a Site is a logical organizational unit. A site is not necessarily a separate physical location, but it can be managed separately in VAO.
Every installed VAO server defines a site. Sites are used in VAO for two reasons:
- To allow a scalable distributed architecture for data collection.
- To provide administrative role-based delegation for failover plan authoring.
There are two types of sites in the VAO infrastructure — DR site and Production site.
- DR site
DR site is the site where VM replicas are located, and where failover plans are created, stored, tested and executed using VAO.
- Production site(s)
Production site is the site where source production VMs are located.
In a single VAO deployment, there can be multiple Production sites, but only one DR site. Should the environment have more than one DR location, you can implement a parallel “mirrored” VAO deployment. For more information on VAO deployment scenarios, see Deployment Scenarios.
