Protected By vs. Protected With

Use protected by when talking about an entity that provides protection. It implies that there is an active agent responsible for protection — in Veeam documentation, this is typically a backup policy or a job.

Use protected with when talking about a mechanism or technology that is used to provide protection. It focuses on the means of protection and implies that there is someone applying the mechanism or technology — in Veeam documentation, this is typically a backup solution.

Tip

Some nouns (such as encryption or firewall) work with both. For example, if you write The data is protected by encryption, it will indicate that encryption is presented as the protector, whereas if you write The data is protected with encryption, it will indicate that encryption is presented as the means of protection. Both are correct; choose one approach and follow it consistently throughout your document.

Examples

  1. The amount of RAM utilized by policies running on a backup appliance depends on the total amount of RAM allocated to the backup appliance, the number of configured backup policies and the number of workloads protected by each policy.
  2. This category includes groups of VMs protected by Veeam backup jobs, Veeam replication jobs and Veeam CDP policies that are managed by Veeam Backup & Replication servers connected to Orchestrator.
  3. In Veeam Backup & Replication, computers that you want to protect with Veeam Plug-Ins are organized into protection groups.
  4. Veeam Backup & Replication allows you to create backup jobs for the following types of protected computers:
    • Microsoft Windows computers protected with Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows.
    • Linux computers protected with Veeam Agent for Linux.
