Storage Performance Profile Analysis

This report analyzes storage IOPS and latency statistics across a time range. The report helps you track whether the latency threshold is exceeded within the reporting period, and shows what IOPS values are achieved at latency peaks.

Description

The Storage Performance Profile Analysis report analyzes IOPS and latency statistics for datastores, shows correlation between the IOPS and latency metrics and helps identify datastores with performance issues.

Parameters

Date/time Selection: defines the time period to analyze in the report.

Scope: defines a list of Groups or Objects that will be analyzed in the report (by default, the VMware Datastores group is selected).
The Add Group option returns a Group and all objects that a group contains. The Add Object option returns only the selected object.

Aggregation Type: defines whether the data in the report will be aggregated to Hourly or Daily values.

Threshold: defines the maximum latency threshold in millisecond.

Group By: defines how data will be grouped in the report (by Hosts or Datastores).

Sample Usage

Find the most loaded datastores, assuming that the maximum latency has to be lower than 30 milliseconds. Use the historical performance data for this month.

Instructions

  1. Open the Storage Performance Profile Analysis report.
  2. From the From list, select This month > First day. From the To list, select This month > Last day.
  3. Leave the Scope section without changes.
  4. From the Aggregation Type list, select Daily.
  5. From the Group By list, select Datastores.
  6. In the Threshold field, enter 30.
  7. Click Run to view the report.

Report Output

The IOPS achieved at latency peak chart will show 5 most loaded datastores. For each datastore, the chart shows the worst latency value reported within the selected period and the IOPS value that was achieved during this latency peak.

The details table will provide the following information for each datastore included in the report scope:

Column

Description

Datastore Name

Name of the datastore.

Number of VMs on the Datastore

Number of VMs whose files are hosted on the datastore.

Number of Hosts on the Datastore

Number of hosts connected to the datastore.

Maximum IOPS

Maximum number of IOPS reported for the selected period.

Worst Latency

Highest latency value reported for the selected period.

For each datastore, the Latency and IOPS statistics section will provide day-by-day latency and IOPS values and show whether (and when) the defined latency threshold has been breached.
