Appendix E. Configuring VSS Snapshot Settings
To create application-consistent snapshots of Windows-based VMs, Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV uses the Nutanix AHV functionality that freezes applications running on the processed VMs while the snapshots are taken. Since Nutanix AHV leverages the Microsoft VSS technology, the following types of VSS snapshot settings are supported:
- Full (VSS_BT_FULL) — in this case, Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV performs database log truncation after each snapshot.
- Copy (VSS_BT_COPY) — in this case, Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV does not perform database log truncation.
Keep in mind that enabling VSS_BT_COPY for VMs that function as Microsoft Exchange Mail Servers may may significantly increase the amount of storage space consumed in your Nutanix AHV clusters.
Due to Nutanix AHV technical limitations, Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV creates snapshots using the default VSS settings. To change this behavior, do the following:
- Enable SSH access on the Nutanix AHV backup appliance.
- Connect to the Nutanix AHV backup appliance using SSH.
- Open the /opt/VeeamBackupAgent/appsettings.json file and locate the BackupRestore configuration section.
- Modify the NgtVssBackupType parameter value.
- Save the appsettings.json file.
- Restart the backup service using the following command:
sudo systemctl restart veeamahvbackup |
Note |
This parameter only affects backup snapshots, not user snapshots. For more information, see Snapshot Types. |
