Veeam Agent Management Guide

Backup of Microsoft Exchange Database Availability Groups

You cannot currently use Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows to process a DAG (Database Availability Group) as a regular failover cluster. This scenario is not available because DAG does not support concurrent VSS snapshots at multiple DAG nodes. If you want to use Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows to back up data pertaining to a DAG, you can instruct Veeam Agent to process individual nodes of a DAG as standalone servers.

Before you set up Veeam Backup & Replication to use Veeam Agent for DAG backup, make sure that protection groups that are already configured in the inventory do not include the cluster account of the DAG whose data you want to back up. Otherwise, you will not be able to add an individual server that acts as a DAG cluster node to a Veeam Agent backup job.

To process a DAG with Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows, you need to complete the following tasks:

  1. Create a protection group that includes Active Directory objects and add to this protection group one of the following types of objects:
  • Computer accounts of servers that act as cluster nodes of the DAG whose data you want to back up
  • Active Directory container that includes computer accounts of DAG cluster nodes

To learn more, see Creating Protection Groups.

Backup of Microsoft Exchange Database Availability Groups Note:

If the cluster account of the DAG and computer accounts of the DAG cluster nodes reside in the same Active Directory container, you need to exclude the cluster account from the protection group. To learn more, see Exclude Objects from Protection Group.

Alternatively, you can create a protection croup that includes individual computers and add to this protection group servers that act as cluster nodes of the DAG whose data you want to back up.

  1. Include each server that acts as a DAG cluster node in a separate Veeam Agent backup job configured in Veeam Backup & Replication. In the backup job settings, specify backup schedule in a way that these backup jobs start at different time and do not overlap. To do this, you can use the job chaining option. To learn more, see Adding Computers to New Backup Job and Scheduling Settings for Servers and Clusters.
