Upgrading to Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV 3a

You can upgrade Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV from version 2.0, 2.1 or 3.0 to 3a.

Important

Veeam Availability for Nutanix AHV 1.0 is no longer supported. To upgrade it to Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV 3a, follow the procedure described in Appendix B. Upgrading Veeam Availability for Nutanix AHV 1.0.

Before you start the upgrade process, do the following:

Download the latest version of the Veeam Backup & Replication ISO from the Veeam Backup & Replication Download page to the backup server.
Download the latest version of the Nutanix AHV Plug-in installation file from the Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV: Download page to the backup server.
Plan a 1-hour maintenance period. During this period no backup or restore operations should be running. It is recommended to let running jobs complete successfully and to temporarily disable any periodic jobs to prevent them from starting during the upgrade.
Make sure the AHV Backup Proxy VM is turned on.

Online Upgrade

If your Veeam Backup & Replication server and the AHV Backup Proxy are connected to the Internet, do the following:

[Applies only for upgrading from version 2.0 or 2.1] Upgrade Veeam Backup & Replication to version 11a (build 11.0.1.1261). For more information, see the Upgrading to Veeam Backup & Replication 11 or 11a section of the Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide.

Nutanix AHV Plug-in will be upgraded to version 3.0, and AHV backup proxies will be upgraded to version 3a.

Note

If proxy upgrade fails with the <Updates not found or proxy is unavailable> error, check the KB article to resolve the issue.

Upgrade Nutanix AHV Plug-in to version 3a. To do that, run the installation file and complete the Nutanix AHV Plug-in for Veeam Backup & Replication wizard using default settings.
[Applies only for upgrading from version 3.0] Upgrade AHV backup proxies to version 3a. To do that:

In the Veeam Backup & Replication console, open the Backup Infrastructure view.
Navigate to Backup Proxies > Out of Date.
Select an AHV backup proxy and click Upgrade Proxy on the ribbon.
In the Components Update window, click Apply.

Offline Upgrade

If your Veeam Backup & Replication server or the AHV Backup Proxy is not connected to the Internet, do the following:

For each AHV Backup Proxy added to the backup infrastructure, create a configuration backup. For more information, see Backing Up Configuration Settings.
Remove AHV backup proxies from the backup infrastructure. For more information, see Removing Nutanix AHV Backup Proxies.

Note

Do not select the Permanently delete the proxy VM from the cluster and all of its backup jobs (irreversible) option. If upgrade fails, you will be able to add the proxies back to the backup infrastructure.

Shut down AHV backup proxy VMs. For more information, see Rebooting or Shutting Down Proxy VM.
[Applies only for upgrading from version 2.0 or 2.1] Upgrade Veeam Backup & Replication to version 11a (build 11.0.1.1261). For more information, see the Upgrading to Veeam Backup & Replication 11 or 11a section of the Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide.

Nutanix AHV Plug-in will be automatically upgraded to version 3.0.

Upgrade Nutanix AHV Plug-in to version 3a. To do that, run the installation file and complete the Nutanix AHV Plug-in for Veeam Backup & Replication wizard using default settings.
Deploy a new AHV backup proxy for each AHV cluster. For more information, see Adding AHV Backup Proxy.
For each deployed AHV Backup Proxy, restore configuration settings. For more information, see Restoring Configuration Settings.

If configuration settings are successfully restored and new AHV backup proxies are running properly, you can remove VMs with the old AHV backup proxies from AHV clusters.
