Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 [Archived]
Veeam Backup Explorers User Guide

Considerations and Limitations

The following considerations refer to mail data restore performed with Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange.

General

  • To work with mail datastore and open mailbox databases, Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange utilizes Microsoft native engine (ese.dll dynamic link library), which is installed together with Microsoft Exchange.
  • If you add the database to Veeam Explorer scope automatically from the Exchange server backup (as described here), Veeam Explorer will obtain ese.dll from that backup (despite the settings you configured in the program Options).
  • If you add the database to Veeam Explorer scope explicitly, using the Add Store command (as described here), Veeam Explorer will obtain ese.dll you specified in the program Options.

However, if Veeam Explorer is running on a Windows 2008 machine, it may be unable to open Exchange Server 2016 CU5 (or newer) databases using the corresponding version of ese.dll. To work around this issue, do any of the following:

  • Install Veeam Backup & Replication (server or console) on the machine with any Windows OS higher than Windows 2008, and run Veeam Explorer on it.
  • Alternatively, configure Veeam Explorer to use ese.dll version as of Exchange 2016 CU4 or earlier, as described here. Then obtain database files manually using file-level restore and Veeam Backup Browser, as described here.

Restore Scenarios

  • Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange does not support restore via PSDirect, VIX, or Sphere API.
  • Sending restored objects to users may fail for items larger than 3MB. If such problem occurs, please refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2183292/fix-failure-sending-mail-error-message-when-you-send-an-email-message.
  • Bulk restore (restore of multiple objects) is not supported for public folders. Use usual (per-object) restore instead.
  • If you want to restore In-Place Hold Items or Litigation Hold Items to the original location (that is, original mailbox system folders), consider the limitations that exist for this kind of restore:
  • Restore of In-Place Hold Items is not supported for on-premises Exchange Server 2013 due to EWS limitations.
  • To restore In-Place Hold Items of Exchange 2016 mailboxes, these mailboxes must have In-Place Hold enabled and applied at least once, with DiscoveryHolds system folder creation. Otherwise, restore of In-Place Hold Items will fail with an error:
"Failed to restore In-Place Hold Items. Restore of In-Place Hold Items into Exchange 2013 is not supported".
For information on enabling In-Place Hold and Litigation Hold, see this Microsoft TechNet article: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff637980(v=exchg.160).aspx
  • Currently, Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange does not support browsing and restoring items from the Versions subfolder of the Recoverable Items folder used by In-Place Hold and Litigation Hold to preserve items.
