Glossary

This section is intended to help users understand product-specific terms and abbreviations that appear in the documentation.

A

  • Azure Local cluster — an Azure Local cluster connected to the Orchestrator infrastructure directly or as part of an SCVMM hierarchy.

B

C

  • CDP (Continuous Data Protection) — a replication technology that helps to protect mission-critical VMware virtual machines and provides minimum recovery time objective (RTO). For more information, see the Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide, section Continuous Data Protection (CDP).

D

  • DataLab — a virtual lab that allows users to create multiple test environments, to perform recovery and application verification including custom scripts, and to generate detailed reporting. For more information, see DataLabs.

E

  • embedded server — a Veeam Backup & Replication server that is installed with the Orchestrator server to supply Veeam PowerShell libraries and support certain disaster recovery scenarios. For more information, see Solution Architecture.

F

  • failover — a process of switching from the original VM in the production site to its VM replica in the recovery site. For more information on replica failover, see Failover and Failback. For more information on CDP failover, see Failover and Failback. For more information on storage failover, see Storage Plans.
  • failback — a process of switching back to the original VM in the production site from its VM replica in the recovery site. For more information on replica failback, see Failover and Failback. For more information on CDP failback, see Failover and Failback. For more information on storage failback, see Storage Plans.

H

  • Hyper-V cluster — a Microsoft Hyper-V cluster connected to the Orchestrator infrastructure directly or as part of an SCVMM hierarchy.

I

  • inventory group — a set of virtual or physical machines that are managed by the embedded Veeam ONE server installed on the Orchestrator server. For more information, see Inventory Groups.
  • inventory item — an item that is added to the list of inventory items for a scope for it to become available for use in the scope. For more information, see Managing Inventory Items.

M

O

  • Orchestrator agent — a Veeam Backup & Replication server connected to Orchestrator that manages the process of recovering machines. For more information, see Connecting Veeam Backup & Replication Servers.
  • Original VM Location — an original location of processed VMs that is automatically detected by Orchestrator and used for restore. For more information, see Managing Recovery Locations.

R

  • recovery location — a set of resource groups that is used as a target location when recovering machines. For more information, see Recovery Locations.
  • recovery plan — a predefined sequence of actions used to recover applications and services in case of a disaster. For more information, see Recovery Plans.
  • Recovery Point Objective (RPO) — the maximum acceptable period of data loss. For more information, see the Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide, section Planning and Preparation.
  • Recovery Time Objective (RTO) — the amount of time Orchestrator takes to recover from an incident. For more information, see the Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide, section Planning and Preparation.
  • report — a document that provides details of recovery plans and results of plan testing and execution. For more information on types of reports that can be generated, see Generating Reports.

S

  • SCVMM server — a Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager connected to the Orchestrator infrastructure that manages the process of recovery to a Microsoft Hyper-V environment.
  • scope — an extent of access that users have to inventory items such as inventory groups, plan steps, recovery locations, template jobs, credentials and YARA rules. For more information, see Managing Scopes.

T

  • template job — a replication or backup job used to reprotect the recovered VMs. For more information, see Editing Template Jobs.

U

  • user role — a role assigned to a user or a user group to limit the number of operations available in the Orchestrator UI. For more information, see Managing User Accounts.

V

  • Veeam agent backup — a physical workload protected by Veeam Agent for Windows or Veeam Agent for Linux.
  • VM backup — a vSphere or Hyper-V virtual workload protected by Veeam Backup & Replication.
  • VMware vSphere server — a vCenter Server connected to Orchestrator that manages replica VMs and resources used to recover machines to a VMware vSphere environment.

Y

  • YARA rule — a malware detection pattern that can be customized to detect attacks and security threats specific to your environment. For more information, see Managing YARA Rules.
