Backup Job Restrictions

In MacOS, you can enable low data mode for a Wi-Fi connection, including a connection to a personal hotspot, to reduce your data usage over the Wi-Fi network. Low data mode reduces background network traffic by, for example, restricting automatic downloads and updates. Low data mode can be useful for limited-traffic internet plans or low-speed internet connections.

You can configure Veeam Agent to detect in real time if the protected computer is connected to the internet via a Wi-Fi network with enabled low data mode or a personal hotspot. When such internet connection is detected, Veeam Agent will not run a scheduled backup job and will stop any backup job that is already running.

Considerations and Limitations

Before you activate detection of personal hotspot or low data mode Wi-Fi connection, consider the following:

  • Veeam Agent can detect a personal hotspot and low data mode connection in MacOS 13 Ventura or later.
  • The restriction will only apply to backup jobs that store backups to a repository accessed over network — a Veeam backup repository, Veeam cloud backup repository, object storage repository or a network shared folder. The restriction will not apply to backup jobs targeted at a local repository or a mounted network shared folder.
  • You can override the restriction to run a backup job by starting the backup job manually.

How It Works

When a backup job restriction is enabled, and the conditions for restriction are met, Veeam Agent behaves as follows:

  • A scheduled backup job will fail on start.
  • Job retry sessions will fail on start.
  • If the restriction is triggered while a backup job is running, such backup job will be stopped and the session status will be Failed.
