Configuring Backup Proxies

In this article

In the backup infrastructure, the backup proxy acts as a “data mover”. While the backup server performs the role of the job manager, the backup proxy is responsible for actual data handling. It retrieves VM data from the source datastore, processes and transfers it to target.

By default, the backup server performs the role of the default backup proxy and is added to the backup proxy list right after the product installation. Resources of such local backup proxy may be sufficient if you use Veeam Backup & Replication to protect VMs in a small virtual environment or for testing purposes.

For larger VMware vSphere environments, you need to deploy a number of dedicated backup proxies to offload VM data processing and transport tasks from the backup server. To configure a backup proxy, you must assign the backup proxy role to a Microsoft Windows server added to the backup infrastructure.
