VM Restore from Tape

In this article

Restoring VMs from tape is in many ways like restoring from disk as Veeam tracks all tape backups in the database. You need to choose a VM and a desired restore point. If the tapes are online in your tape device, Veeam Backup & Replication will get the needed data automatically. If the tapes are offline, Veeam Backup & Replication will list the names of the required tapes. For VM backups stored on tape, you can choose between the following options for restore:

    • Restoring VM backups to repository or disk. This option allows you to copy particular VM backups from tape in case you need them on disk, or also for VM guest OS files restore. You can also restore full backups or even backup chains to a repository or any location of your choice. The restored backup is registered in the Veeam Backup & Replication console so that you can work with it and use it for any restore scenario later on. You can choose any restore point available on tape, and Veeam Backup & Replication will select the relevant files needed to restore the VM to the selected point-in-time state.
    • Restoring VMs to virtual infrastructure. The process of restoring VM from tape delivers all possibilities of a VM from disk restore including selecting a restore point, choosing target location, changing VM configuration settings and so on. The VM restore process consists of two stages which are copying the relevant archive to a temporary location such as a repository or a folder on disk followed by the standard VM restore.
