Storage Snapshots in Secondary Destination Jobs

In this article

You can configure a backup job to create regular backup files in the backup repository and, additionally, populate a snapshot chain on NetApp storage systems with storage snapshots. Veeam Backup & Replication lets you create application-consistent storage snapshots in the following secondary destinations:

    • Primary NetApp storage array where VM disks are located
    • NetApp SnapMirror
    • NetApp SnapVault

The backup job of this type is performed in the following way:

    1. Veeam Backup & Replication triggers vCenter Server to create a VMware snapshot for a VM.
    2. Veeam Backup & Replication instructs the NetApp storage system to create a temporary snapshot of a volume or LUN capturing VM disks and VMware VM snapshot. The VMware VM snapshot on the primary NetApp storage array is then deleted.
    3. Veeam Backup & Replication uses the temporary storage snapshot as a data source for backup and replication.
    4. After the backup or replication job is finished, the temporary volume snapshot is copied to the NetApp storage system and published as a new snapshot in the snapshot chain.
    5. After snapshot transport, Veeam Backup & Replication performs cleanup operations and removes the temporary snapshot on the primary NetApp storage array.
