NFS Protocol

If the NetApp storage system operates over NFS, you do not have to install any additional licenses to use Backup from Storage Snapshots.

For Backup from Storage Snapshots, Veeam Backup & Replication creates a snapshot of a volume on which the NFS share with VM data resides. The created volume snapshot is used as a source of data. Veeam Backup & Replication starts its native NFS agent on the backup proxy and uses this agent to read data from the cloned NFS share on the volume snapshot.

Requirements for NFS Protocol

Make sure that the following requirements are met:

• All proxies used for VM backup must have network access to the NFS data network. You must be able to ping the NFS network interfaces from the proxies.
• The VBR server must have access to the management network interface.
• NFS access rules (SVM export policies) must be created. VBR can create the NFS access rules automatically. You can turn off this option, but in this case make sure the settings are correct.
• If you are using a secondary NetApp in backup process, you must be sure that its volumes are mounted (have configured mount path).
• The Snapshot directory (.snapshot) must be visible in the NFS volumes. To ensure that, login to your NetApp Ontap System Manager, select the NFS volume, click Snapshot Copies – Configuration Settings and select the box Make Snapshot directory (.snapshot) visible.
