Checking for Updates
Veeam Backup & Replication automatically notifies you about updates that must be installed or can be installed to enhance your experience with the product. Update notifications eliminate the risk of running an out-of-date backup server or missing a critical update that could affect data protection and disaster recovery tasks.
Veeam Backup & Replication requests Veeam Updater to check for updates:
- Every 12 hours.
- When you install a new license.
- When you check for updates manually.
VBR Product Updates
In the VBR web UI, notifications about new updates are displayed automatically at the top right corner.
To check for updates manually, do the following:
- Open Veeam Updater on the backup server
- Open the Updates tab.
- Click Check for updates.
Note |
If an update for Veeam Updater itself is available, the service updates and restarts automatically. |
Hypervisor Updates
Veeam Backup & Replication also notifies you about hypervisor updates, fixes, and patches that should be installed on Microsoft Hyper-V hosts and off-host backup proxies for VBR to work with Microsoft Hyper-V correctly.
You can also see available hypervisor updates in the Managed Servers > Missing Updates node in the Backup Infrastructure view.
Update notifications are enabled by default.
How Hypervisor Update Checking Works
To check for hypervisor updates, Veeam Backup & Replication uses a special XML file on the Veeam Update Notification Server (dev.veeam.com). The file contains information about available hypervisor updates, fixes, and patches.
Veeam Backup & Replication downloads this file from the Veeam Update Notification Server once a week. It also collects information about updates already installed on Hyper-V hosts and compares the two. If new hypervisor updates are available, Veeam Backup & Replication informs you about them.
Note |
Make sure that the backup server is connected to the internet and update notification is enabled in Veeam Backup & Replication options. In the opposite case, update notification will not function. |
Installing Hypervisor Updates
If a Microsoft Hyper-V host or off-host backup proxy added to the backup infrastructure misses important hypervisor fixes and patches that could affect Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam Backup & Replication displays a warning icon over the host or proxy in the inventory pane.
To install hypervisor updates:
- In the Backup Infrastructure view, select a host or off-host backup proxy and click Missing Updates on the ribbon.
- Use the Missing Updates window to manage updates:
- To install an update, click the update link. Veeam Backup & Replication opens a webpage with the update description and download link.
- To ignore an update, select it and click Dismiss. Veeam Backup & Replication removes it from the list and stops notifying you about it. To ignore all updates, click Dismiss All.
- To reset the list to its initial state, click Re-Check. Veeam Backup & Replication displays all updates, including dismissed ones.
- To copy update list details, click Copy to Clipboard.
