How Updates Work

Update operations work as follows:

• Veeam Updater checks for updates every 12 hours: it sends a request to https://vbr.butler.veeam.com/winrepo/ and saves the update information to its database on the backup server. If an update for Veeam Updater itself is available, the service updates and restarts automatically.
• Veeam Backup & Replication also requests Veeam Updater to check for updates when you install a new license, run a rescan, or check for updates manually. For the full list of triggers, see Checking for Updates.
• At the scheduled time, or when you start installation manually, Veeam Updater installs the selected updates. Before installing, Veeam Updater runs a configuration check and reports compatibility issues that must be resolved first. During installation, Veeam Updater performs the following steps:

• Downloads update packages to C:\ProgramData\Veeam\Updater\Data\Cache\packages on the backup server.
• Validates package dependencies.
• Installs update packages.
• Restarts Veeam core services.
• Restarts the backup server if required.
