Solution Architecture

The solution architecture comprises the following set of components:

Backup Server

A backup server is a physical or virtual machine on which Veeam Backup & Replication is installed. The backup server is the configuration, administration and management core of the backup infrastructure. It coordinates backup and restore operations, controls job scheduling and manages resource allocation. In addition to its primary functions, backup server also performs the role of a general-purpose backup proxy — an architecture component that processes jobs and transfers data to and from backup repositories.

For more information on the backup server, see the sections Backup Server and General-Purpose Backup Proxies.

Veeam Plug-in for KubeVirt

Veeam Plug-in for KubeVirt is an architecture component that enables integration between the backup server and other components of the backup infrastructure. This plug-in allows Veeam Backup & Replication to connect to Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization clusters and to perform data protection and disaster recovery tasks with Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization resources.

Veeam KubeVirt Proxy

The Veeam KubeVirt Proxy is an ephemeral container that resides in an existing Pod in the protected Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization cluster and processes backup workloads when transferring data to and from backup repositories. Each protected Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization cluster must have one dedicated the Veeam KubeVirt Proxy. Veeam Backup & Replication can protect multiple clusters by connecting to multiple proxies.

For more information on the common terms of the Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization, see OpenShift documentation.

VKP Data Mover

VKP (Veeam KubeVirt Proxy) Data Mover is a service that resides in a Pod temporarily deployed by the Veeam KubeVirt Proxy to perform data processing tasks. During backup, VKP Data Mover retrieves data of protected Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization resources and transfers it to backup repositories. During restore, VKP Data Mover transfers backed-up data from repositories to the target location.

Backup Repositories

A backup repository is a storage location where Veeam Backup & Replication stores backups of protected Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization VMs.
